Software update; about 200 vans get new seatbacks

Which vans are affected

Certain 2022 to 2026 Toyota Sienna Hybrid 7 seat minivans built from September 16, 2021 to July 20, 2026 with seat belt pretensioners from a specific supplier. NHTSA campaign 26V690. Eight seat Siennas are not part of this recall.

What can go wrong

When the seat belt pretensioner fires in a crash, it can make the outboard recliner of a second row seat vibrate. That can let the recliner's cam turn and release the locked position, so the seatback may not stay in place during the crash.

Toyota found the problem in its own sled and crash tests in September and October 2026. Autoblog reports that no incidents have been reported.

What owners should do

  1. Check your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls or with a Toyota dealer.
  2. Watch for the owner letter. Owners are to be notified of the remedy in December 2026.
  3. Book the repair once the letter arrives. Most vans get an updated airbag (SRS) control unit software file; about 200 2022 to 2025 vans need both second row seatbacks replaced.
  4. Questions: Toyota customer support at 1-800-331-4331.

The repair is free at Toyota dealers. Recall work is easy to forget once the letter is in a drawer, so log the visit in Badger with the date and mileage when it is done.
